Default [Resolved] New build problem trying to install Vista

I need some input on a problem that I'm having with my newbuild. I'm building a new Vista computer with the following components

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ Windsor
Gigabyte GA-MA69G-S3H Socket AM2 AMD 690G
G SKill 2 GB (2 x 1gb) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ
1 Western Digital Caviar RE WD1600YS 160 GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0GB
Samsung 20X DVD+R DVD Burner PATA Model SH-202G
Windows Vista 64 Bit Home Premium.

I have assembled all of the components and set the BIOS settings. The problem starts when I try and install Vista. The system boots up to the initial screen just fine and completes the "Windows is loading files..." screen. The Miscrosoft Corporation screen comes up with the progress bar. Then the screen goes blank and a mouse pointer shows for approximately 12 seconds. Then unexpectedly the computer reboots and starts the process over again. I get no errors, no beeps from the BIOS, nothing.

I know that this motherboard appears to be very picky with the SATA setup. I have the OnChip SATA Type set to "Native IDE" in the BIOS and have tried "Legacy IDE" both with no luck.

Any ideas what might cause this?

There's no SATA setting in the chip ?? IDE is the old standard-- this maybe a chip to make your mobo "backward" compatible-- so you can run IDE drives. Can you turn it off ?

I will be back later/do more research...

Thanks for looking into the issue I'm having. It's an Award Bios number 6A669 for the AMD 690G chipset. There are only 2 setup parameters for SATA under Integrated Peripherals. They are:

OnChip SATA Controller: options Enabled or Disabled

and

OnChip SATA Type: options "Native IDE", "RAID", "Legacy IDE", or "SATA->AHCI".

Not sure if that helps. I have a query into Gigabyte but they haven't gotten back to me. Thanks again for your help.

OK, I tried the SATA->AHCI setting, and it continues to reboot as before.

According to the manual the 4 settings for the OnChip SATA Type are:

Native IDE: Allows the SATA controller to operate in Native IDE mode. (Default)
Enable Native IDE mode if you wish to install operating systems that support Native mode, e.g. Windows XP/200

RAID: Enables RAID for the SATA Controler.

Legacy IDE: Allows the SATA controller to operate in Legacy IDE mode. In Legacy mode the SATA controller uses dedicated IRQs that cannot be shared with other device. Set this option to Legacy IDE if you wish to install operating systems that do not support Native mode e.g. Windows 98/ME

SATA->AHCI: Configures the SATA controller to AHCI mode. Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) is an interface specification that allows the storage driver to enable advanced Serial ATA features such as Native Command Queing and hot plug.
