Default mobo fried... I reckon!

Hi there, new to this forum thing. I've searched on forums but never posted.

I recently got a pc (minus HDD) from a guy who builds. I had an old HDD which I managed to install Win98 on last night. However it wasn't easy and sfter days of messing aroiund it finally worked.
This morning however, the thing won't boot and then I noticed a good ten or so capacitors on the mobo fried and some leaking!! Anyway, can anyone recommend a cheap enough replacement? Seems like the Intel D845 isn't available anymore.

I'm pretty new to pc repair/building so keep it simple for my simple brain.

Hi Gigantor, welcome to the PCHF.

Unfortunately if you can't buy a new D845 board, then you're best bet would be ebay.
Or check your local news paper...

Unless one of the other guys here can recommend somethign else.

Your best bet is to determine what form factor you require and then find a bundle deal to suit that. here's a link to a google search as an example. See this one for an under £50 deal and you supply the memory, psu and other bits .... (which you already have) - this is not a recommendation just ane xample of what's out there.

However, if you 'recently' got the PC then surely you have some form of warranty from this person? I'd personally go down that route initially.

Cheers guys.

Forgot to mention the pc was a spare and I got it for free! Basically i'm trying to rescue some data from a corrupt hdd and i didn't want to risk my main pc. checked out some mobo/cpu bundles and that seems like a pretty safe bet.

Thanks again for the help.

if its just to try to rescue some old files, then look around, you might know someone who was planning on throwing out an old pc, or a bussiness or school that is replacing their old pcs, a friend of mine works at a university where they had over 200 pc's that they were just gonna throw away, some of my mates got some to fool around with
