I've perused the Mobo tops and couldn't quite find something along what I'm lookin into. I have this old Gateway SELECT K7-950 (w/ WIN XP sp2) my girls use for games. I salvaged it from the heap awhile ago because it had a 950hz AMD TBird, AMD Athlon processor in a 462-pin ZIF Socket A 133-MHz host bus speed, in it. It's running 768MB PC133 and can take another 768MBs. I'd like to max out the board on capacity. The Mobo is an MSI MS-6330 Ver: 2.1. Gateway lists that it can be upped to a AMD Athlon 1.3GHz 133FSB A1333AMS3C. MSI lists that it can be upped to a AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 1533MHz, 256KB) CPU ZIF Socket A (462).
Here's the thing. I have an old 1800+ 1.533Mhz Palamino. I would like to 1) get this baby in w/o having to buy another CPU, and 2) the obvious, crank it at the higher speed for my girl's gaming. I did install the 1800+ and tried but alas the Gateway OEM wouldn't recognize it.
I'm pretty sure it was the Gateway issue, but am open to other possibilities here too.I've read if I flash the board, with the updated MSI BIOS, it will basically zap the Mobo useless. Although a few users said it worked for them ( but I don't want to chance it) So my inquiry. What can it do? Is there anyway to basically strip that MSI mobo of its Gateway qualities? Making it a MSI board that will handle the 1800+? Or is an OEM board destined for a life of limitations and I'm stuck with hunting down a 1.3 Ghz?
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated!
