Hi there! The title is not totally correct, it's more like it won't start up after it's been shutdown or it won't restart after the Restart icon is pushed and if this has already been asked and answered, I am sorry for reasking the question again.
Here's my story. I have a PC that I built that has just recently been upgraded with a new video card and a GB more of memory. I recently had to reformat due to a virus or adware or something that I couldn't get rid of. I have reinstalled everything that I need back on the machine and have updated all of the Windows patches as well.
I also had attached as a storage drive a Maxtor 40GB internal drive. Upon reformatting and reinstalling, for some reason the PC would never detect the Maxtor drive. I tried messing with the jumpers, switching out the ribbon cable, and the like but still no luck. I then talked to a friend about it who mentioned something about clearing the CMOS with the jumpers. I did that and now when I boot up I get a message that tells me that my CMOS is wrong and to hit F1 for set up or F2 to accept default values. The first time I hit F1 and went into the BIOS to reset all of the settings but when I saved and rebooted all that would happen was the CPU fan turns on, the HD light is a constant red and all that I hear is two little conitunuous beeps. Nothing on the monitor and nothing happening except the beeps.
At first I thought that I did something wrong witht he CMOS jumper and I did a clear again.
I turn the power back on and the same thing happened as above. This time I did the F2 and it booted into Windows no problems.
I tried to restart and the same thing. This time I removed the battery and replaced it but to no avail.
At one point, I ended up just pulling the power cord out of habit and plugged it back in and restarted and it booted up. I got the same messages but after hitting F2, it did starts Windows. I'm using this machine to type this message.
I figures as long as I leave it running if will be okay. Did I mess up something with the MOBO by clearing the CMOS that way?
Prior to doing the CMOS clear, it always did boot up on a shutdown and restarted when clicked as well.
Any thoughts from anyone would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance
Tim
