Hey NightJ,

Glad to hear you are making some progress. I think that what has happened is that you have a partial BIOS install, and are now stuck. I'm going to PM the Tech Team to take a look, BIOS is not my specialty, and I want to make sure the instructions you are given are absolutely spot on. OK?

Keep an eye out for their posts.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

Ok -- I am coming in in the middle of this saga --so bear with me... If I'm reading your previous posts correctly-- you tried to install a "burned copy" from an older Dell computer on your new hardware-- correct ?

Yes , that is true. It is a backup cd from the dell dimension 4700. Aarons told me that all I had to do was call microsoft and let them know what was up , and they would allow me to reactivate it on the new machine.

That is an issue that can sit in the "later" bin for right now. Right now , my computer wont even post. I cant get into the bios, I cant reformat, all I can do is stare at my fans going round and round, and my x1900's red lights by the power connection just glowing. Ive tried reseating my ram, using one chip, using two , using three, using all four , putting them in in different combinations , disconnecting my cd rom drives, my floppy , etc. Nothing. I have a 400 watt ATX power supply , was working fine yesterday , albeit the crashes.

Im worried that I short circuited my motherboard. It still turns on and everything, it just wont post.

A journey of a thousand minutes begins with a single "OI !!!" Going to try to stay optimistic , I called asus , they think I have a fried motherboard, still under warranty. Ill have to call them again in the morning to get a new one shipped to me.

With all that going on... it certainly seems like a faulty board could be the culprit... Asus is generally rock-solid -- I have a P4P800 Deluxe I've been running 24-7 for 4 years. If you can't get past post something serious is wrong !

Please let us know how you make out with their tech-support-- I think you'll do fine-- but we like to keep "tabs" on issues with hardware.

For comments:
I dont think that the windows ME will do much better at all , as it isnt equipped to handle dual core

ME is a piece of garbage (keeping it clean) --throw it away.

Aarons told me that all I had to do was call microsoft and let them know what was up , and they would allow me to reactivate it on the new machine.
I 'd be very interested to hear how THAT turns out ....I have never heard of such a thing... if it works it could save a lot of money/aggravation for a LOT of people.

Re-activating windows, not quite sure how it works, but I think AW could explain it better in his thread "URGENT : wont boot into windows !"

If needed I may be able to get a copy of windows courtesy of the US government , via vocational rehab, as I need an OS to do my college coursework. One of my main reasons for upgrading is because later on in my college education , I will be working with a lot of programs that demand a lot of cpu and gpu power. I wonder if I can convince them to get me a copy of vista....

In any case, once I have the new motherboard , Ill update here on how it goes.

Hey NightJ,

As Vista is the new current standard you may very well be able to get them to do that for you, but remember, the first service pak hasn't been released yet, and remember what XP was like when it first roled out.

We'll keep an eye out for your update.
