Default PC keeps switching off

Hi
My PC keeps turning itself off.
It reboots into linux when this happens so it can be annoying sometimes.
I`ve never actually been there to witness my pc switch itself off, but as i said it boots to linux and when i come home i find it at the linux log in screen.
I`ve recently had a problem with my gfx card fan which i thought i fixed.
The fan wasnt spinning properly so i got a new one.
It was round about the time the old fan stopped working properly that my pc started switching itself off on its own. I cant think of any reason for this to happen other than overheating, which it shouldnt be doing because my gfx card now has a working fan, nothing else has changed and my cpu and psu fans are running as they always did.
Anybody got any idea why it might be restarting, other than a virus.
Thanks

Hi Mintedjo,

A couple of thoughts, have you tried changing out your PSU? It may be underpowered, or dying.

Also, it would be helpful if you ran some temperature tests to see if the problem is indeed heat.

Do you know what temps you are running while the PC is idle?

Just so we aren't missing something really dumb, you don't have anyone else in the house who could be restarting the PC do you ?

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

I expected somebody to suggest that someone was turning it off.
None of my family use my pc or even enter my room. Sometimes it happens during the night while everybody is asleep and during the day while everybody is out.

How do i go about doing temp tests?
I dont have a spare psu to test. My pc never used to do this and i havent added any new hardware recently so i doubt that it is underpowered. Its more likely that my psu is just dying like you said.
Also what does "LGW" mean? :-)

Well I had to ask, LOL. LGW is Lady Green Witch, , just less to type.

Here is a really good free utillity for testing the CPU temperature, it utilized the sensor that is connected to the Motherboard. MotherboardMonitor.

Let me know if you need further instructions on that one. Otherwise postback your temps here.

If your temperatures are running fine, then chances are it's your PSU dying, luckily they aren't terribly expensive, and you should easily be able to replace it.

Thanks LGW ;-)
I`ll do the tests.
[Edit]That is, i would do the tests... My motherboard isnt on the list of motherboards it tells you to select from. What should i do? [/Edit]
If it does turn out to be my psu i`ll leave it.
Its not causing major problems its just annoying.
It hasnt done it thru last night or today while i`ve been away.

Hey Mint,

Please post the exact make and model of your MoBo and I will attempt to find a utility that will work for you.

Sounds like the PSU heard you were thinking of getting rid of it, and decided to behave, lol .

Looking forward to your reply,
