Well apparently a single beep is a normal startup.
Try unseating and reseating the memory sticks that are inserted.

Hi jckip, Welcome to PCHF by the way.

Just a few questions:

- Does the rebooting happen exactly 5 seconds or is it slightly random?
- When you plug your PC into the mains, does the PC power on without you pressing the power button?
- Can I also have the service tag number, normally found on the bottom, right side of your PC?

Thanks for the suggestions.

The beep is definately not the normal beep I used to hear, it has been replaced by a lower, almost grating sound.

The restart is random, I can occasionally get past the POST screen and almost to the windows loading screen, but sometimes it happens before POST has even finished.

And yes, the PC does turn on when I plug in the power lead.

I am at work at the mo, but will reply in full to your queries and re-insert the memory when I get home.

Thanks

Jon

Hi jcklp,

The power switch itself maybe broken. If you unplug the power button from the motherboard, and then plug your PC into the mains, and see if your PC powers on by itself. If it doesn't, then you have found your answer.

Hi all,

I have tried all of the solutions above. The only one that seems relatively promising is the disconnecting of the power switch. If disconnected, when the power cable is inserted the PC does try to start but, again stops straight away <1 second.

It does not, then, go into its normal cycle. How do I check whether the PC will boot without the switch connected. I have researched on the net about shorting the switch connector, but the motherbourd is connected to the switch and LEDs via a medium sized IDE connector. I don't think that I can short this.

The service tag no. is 94S952J. The express service code is 19880361451.

Thanks again

Jon
