Default USB 2.0 pci upgrade

I have purchased a Belkin USB 2.0 hi speed and it installed beautifully into my year 2000, ABS computer with Intel pentium3, win98se. However, I tried my Sandisk Mini Cruzer flashdrive, or Creative MuVu nx MP3 player and my computer doesnt like it and says fatal error.
Also why doesnt My Computer section recognize the New USB as E:, F: G: drives like my laptop computer with winXP?

I down loaded a driver from SanDisk that is for the win98se and that didn't help.

Am I missing a part in my computer? I would think an Intel P3 and win98se should not have a problem since the Belkin says it works with both and even recognizes the 1.1 USB.

Thanks,
Mark

Welcome to the forums osteomark.

Your usb 1 , and usb 2 are probably butting heads in there. Somewhere in the docs that came with your usb 2 adapter, it should tell you to uninstall the usb 1, or disable it. Look back thru the instructions and see if you can find reference to this in troubleshooting. If not, try this. Uninsatll the adapter , and uninstall it from device manager. Uninstall onboard usb devices, and disable them. Then reinstall your adapter, and the error message`s should go away.

Edit: I assume you have the proper drivers for usb support for 98, and you had been using usb 1. If not youll have to download the drivers for it.

Wow. Thanks for the prompt reply. The Belkin booklet doesnt say anything about disabling the previous USB and there are no troubleshooting problems area in the booklet. I was wondering if the computer was fighting with itself.
What USB do I disable? If I uninstall the Belkin 2.0 what ever is left in the Device USB area would be what was installed right? Sound like your advice should work. You don't think I'm missing a peice on the Motherboard do you?
win 98se and Pentium 3 recognized th USB 2.0 technology right?

thanks,

Mark

The USB 1.0 do work becuase I had a printer in it and I was able to use a wireless USB device so USB 1.1 and 2.0 must be competing right?

Yes, you are right. You cant use both together. You can try just disabling all usb devices except the new adapter, but to be sure, i would uninstall all usb devices in device manager. Right click on them, and select uninstall from the menu. Click ok on the warning. Then with the adapter installed into the pci socket, restart and install the drivers for your adapter. Just remember not to plug anything into the old usb 1 ports.
