OK. I called ABS and they said my power supply is 250Watts and it may not have enough power to run the 2.0 USB flashdrive. They said I shouldn't have to remove or disable any previous USB 1.1. I tried my MP3 1.1 in the 2.0 and works great in reverse. Just doesn't like to run 2.0 USB. This is interesting because I actually got a message on the screen that said the system is critically low on resources since I added the 2.0 USB PCI and tried to use it. That sounds vague to me, but I could see where that could mean low power. I called Staples and they said I should upgrade to a 300,430, or 500 Watt power supply. They are fairly cheap $50-80.

Thanks,

Mark

Well, most usb 2 devices are backwards compatible, they will work on usb 1, but they will work at the slower speed. They may be right about the power supply, if your system is already loaded pretty heavy the upgrade could cause problems. But i disagree with them about not having to disable the usb 1. Anytime ive tried to run both, i get the critical error messages similar to what you get. Disabling the usb 1 solves the problem. The instructions that come with the Stratitec cards mention this, but, it may work ok with theirs.
You can use this little utility to check your power consumption, and see how close you are to being maxed out:
eXtreme Power Supply Calculator - What Power Supply Do I Need
You can also test their theory by disconnecting devices temporarily(cd/dvd, floppy...ect), and see if that helps. A bigger power supply certainly wont hurt anything though. Also, you might want to check your ram usage, see how much you have free.

Uncleed,

Do you know when they stopped making AT power supply adapters? My computer is Feb 2000. Is it the 20 pin ATX? I was going to go to Staples on the way home rather than going home and taking out the power supply then going back out.

Thanks,

Mark

Im not real sure when the industry went to atx, but i think it was well before 2000. Im pretty sure yours would be 20 pin atx. Most power supplies now come with a modular plug, that will work with 20 or 24 pin motherboard.
