Default PCI slot problem

I have a PC Chips motherboard m701G. My motherboard has 2 PCI slots.
One slot has a iogear USB 2.0 card, the other one I installed a SB live card on. I restarted the computer, when it tried to install the SB card the computer froze and I had to reboot.
I took out the sound card and everything worked fine again. I removed the USB card and put the sound card in its place and then I was able to install the sound card. I put the USB card back in where I had taken out the sound card, restarted and the computer froze up again.
The PCI that works ok is the one closest to the AGP slot, the one furthist from the AGP is the one that seems to be the problem.
So it seems as though I have some problem with the PCI slot. Is there something I can do to try and resolve this?
Thanks, Gary

have you tried putting your sound card where the usb was (which you says worked) and then putting the USB in the remaining space effecitly swapping them arround.

Freezeing i think implys a bandwidth problem but its not limited to that there are several options available to you:

1. buy a new motherboard, the one you have is not really surficient i personally dont buy a board withotu 5 pci slots . AGP motherboard are not that expecive not since its classed at yestodays technology.

2. Buy a USB sound card and run it through yoru USB card in the working slot. USB cound cards can be bought for not much money now.

3. Ensure that there is nothing obstructing your second pci slot, anythign which could be cauing it not to work.

4. Give up and accept you cannot have both.

5. Await for someone else to reply with better solutions.

Im not staff on these boards and my answer is purly guessing off my own experteese. Someone with greater knowlage of this will reply shortly with an answer.

Hi Red,

Welcome to PCHF.

It sounds to me like they are sharing the same IRQ resource. There are a limited number of these, so depending on how many hardware devices you have onboard, including any onboard the motherboard itself, you may need to sacrifice one! You can check this in Control Panel, System, Hardware Tab, Device Manager. From there, right click on the device in question, and go to Properties. In the Properties window, click on the Resources tab. If there are any conflicts they will show up on the bottom. You can sometimes overide your IRQ settings from here or BIOS.
