Default [Answered] Motherboard mounting

If things do not go well fter my soon to be rebuild of old system, I may opt to replace the mother board etc but wish to keep my case.
One thing that keeps rolling around in my mind is 'Are the mounting holes and the back for mobo pretty much universal? Can most any mother board fit to any case or will I have to select a new case based on mother board?
thanks

Hi DBonniwell!

Good question!

There are a few sizes, expressed in ATX. ATX is the standard form factor for mainboard, and will fit in pretty much any case. Except small cases (these are most times the one with max. 2 CD/DVD player spaces): here you use micro ATX.

The backside of the case will fit always. There's a metal plate that you can remove, and replace by the new you get with every mainboard.
Looks like this: http://images.google.nl/images?q=tbn...7c/c1/fe_1.JPG

Hope this is clear enough, ask further if you need more information.

howdy ho there bluefish, thanks for your reply,
I dug up the reciept on this system and found out it was a ATX case.
So I can assume that an ATX type case will accomadate an ATX Mobo.
A newer Mobo in an older case correct?
good day
