Default [Fixed] CMOS/GPNV Checksum Bad

Hi, my friend has the following problem on their pc, at start up the following screen appears:

American Megatrends
A6511P2 V1.2 09242001

AMD Athlon, 1333Mhz

Checking NVRAM......
114688kb OK+ 16384kb shared memory

F2:Setup F8:Boot Menu F12:Network Boot ESC:Logo

Auto Detecting Pri Master........IDE Hard Disk
Auto Detecting Pri Slave..........Not Detected
Auto Detecting Sec Master......ATAPI CDROM
Auto Detecting Sec Slave........Not Detected

Primary IDE channel 80 Conducter cable installed
Pri Master:3.34 ST320410A
Ultra DMA Mode - 5, S.M.A.R.T Capable but disabled

Sec Master:T100 Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-308B

CMOS/GPNV Checksum bad

Press F2 to run Setup

Press F1 to load Default values and continue

.................................................. ............................................

It doesnt respond to F1, F2 or any other key presses. Through searching i found the following suggestions: the cmos battery may need replacing or the memory re-seating, both of which i tried yesterday but didnt work. I also left the battery out for an hour.

I have also just found some info suggesting to try a keyboard with a ps2 connection rather than a usb one, which i will try later today but wanted to know if there is anything else i can try while im there to save a wasted journey if its not the keyboard.

I also read about resetting jumpers but not sure how to do this?

Any help appreciated.

Hi z11, welcome to PCHF. The ps2 keyboard is a good idea as a lot of BIOS don't detect USB devices during the phase 1 post screen.

The jumper for BIOS is normally located near the BIOS chip. It has 3 pins and a jumper covering 2 of them. Take the jumper out, and place it in the other two positions for 30 seconds and then put the jumper back.

Your only option, if none if this works it to seek out a new chip!

Default Re: [Fixed] CMOS/GPNV Checksum Bad

Hi,

I am getting a similar message at my start up, I have two fixed harddrives and I have just added an external 500gb hard drive when ever I switch on the PC it loads so far then gives me the following message;
Sec Master: BAC51KJO Maxtor 33073U4
Ultra DMA MODE - 4 S.M.A.R.T. CAPABLE BUT DISABLED.

The only way I can progress past this point is to restart and hold down F8 or F9 until it reaches the next page then release and it will then continue through the start up process.
I have checked for any conflictions in the control panel and everything appears to be working properly.
All drives show and respond from the drop down lists and "my computer" . Is it possible it could be my external drive, I was wondering if I remove it whilst starting up and then plug it in once up and running. What do you guys think?
