Default [Fixed] CMOS Checksum?

Hi,

I removed the power cord from the back of my case to investigate something.

Now when I boot it up, I get a CMOS checksum error, please re-configure cmos settings. This only happens when I disconnect the power cord. It never done this before.

It shouldn't do this just because the power cable was disconnected should it? Does this mean something is going bad?

Hi dolin, welcome to the PCHF

That indicates to me that your CMOS Battery is running out of life.
These are fairly easy and cheap to replace.

I am having terrible luck! I built this computer not even a year ago. The mobo and cmos battery are about 9 months old.

My ATI video card is broke. My hard drive sounds like it almosts stops, causing my PC to freeze every now and then, and now this. And since I removed the video card, blew it off, and put it back in...I'm getting no sound. Wow.

Doubt I'll be building anymore PCs.

It sounds like you've had a terrible time. If you want, post all your problems here and we'll see if we can help you out.

This issue now may not be the CMOS battery but somethign else....

I'll give it a go.

Issue 1.)

Video artifacts in my ATI x800xl 256MB pci-e
Here's how it looks. http://www.aroogala.com/images/error2.jpg

Issue 2.)

Every so often either the hard drive stops, or maybe the processor (fan?) stops, momentarily (1-2 seconds) which causes my system to freeze, and I have to do a hard reboot. Not exactly sure what's stopping, but I can hear it when it happens, so it's rather loud.

Issue 3.)

I can't get any sound with my current sound card now. When something prompts me, I'll just hear a beep from the computer. My onboard sound works, which I tested after this. I stopped getting sound after I unplugged the computer to dust out my system, and I removed the video card. Put it back in, and then got the CMOS checksum errors, then got to the boot screen, etc...but with no sound.

I'm scanning for viruses right now, but once this is done I'm going to unplug and make sure I didn't knock the soundcard loose or anything. Then I'll have to load the CMOS defaults again, because I'm sure It'll give me the checksum error after removing the power cord.

OK...

1. From the look of that - it's only happening in the current window (not all over windows - which could be caused by drivers - do you notice those artifacts while booting up windows?

2. What is it exactly that you hear when it happens?

3. see below...

After looking at al these issues as a whole, it may very well be a power supply issue...what brand/wattage power supply do you have?

And what are the specs of your computer (as a whole)?

1.) Video issue - I've uninstalled the drivers, and am using standard VGA drivers. For a while, the lines weren't as bad with standard VGA, but it's getting worse gradually even with the VGA. I've installed/uninstalled various drivers. I also get the lines in Safe Mode.

To answer your question, no. The lines only start to appear at the blue "Welcome" screen.

2.) It's hard to describe. Like, I hear a normal amount of steady noise coming from the PC. Then when it happens, I hear like a "clunk" and it sounds like I'm powering off the computer. Then the noise returns to normal, but the PC is frozen.

3.) Power supply. I had to replace the PSU about 2 months ago, because the system randomly shut down. I'm using an Antec 500W.

4. System

Nvidia Nforce4 BFG technologies mobo
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3500+
1.5 gig of RAM
ATI X800XL 256MB PCI-E video card
Creative SB Live soundcard
100 gig HD (no further info, it's about 5 years old)
