Question [Answered] What mobo/cpu/ram?

1GHz AMD Athalon (never overclocked)
unknown MOBO - no EECid
512Mb PC133 SDRAM
nVidia GeForce FX5200 128mb (XFX model)
1280x1024 @75Hz 17" Flat panel
IDE 40GB Master - 40GB Slave (5gb page file)
5.1 Soundcard & Harman/kardon speakers/sub
350W psu 120mm front fan 80mm rear fan

I can't be bothered to identify my old mobo (mods please close)

so i thought hell i'll buy a new mobo, ram and processor
what do you all recommend? the system is for fun really - downloading music, dvd's playing games.

my gfx is AGP so AGP would be nice but it seems everything is PCI express now, i need a few pci slots - wifi, lan and 3d sound. but it seems most of these are available onboard.

oh and i'm an AMD fan - never had a problem with them

I see your an AMD fan everyone has been until intel introduced their core 2 duo processors which have performed a lot better than amd's. Have a look here for benchies Tom's Hardware Guide Processors: CPU Charts 2006 I would seriously consider going for an intel.

What is your budget? personally for about £600-700 i would go for an intel core 2 duo e6600, an asus p5B.... motherboard, and about 2gb ram.

ok get a link but i went of the point with the £600-700 i was thinking of a complete build not just mobo/cpu/ram.

I will have a look when you post a link. Although under motherboard bundles intel they onle have one and none for amd might have to buy separate.

komplett.co.uk do some bundle deals aswell as overclockers.co.uk

how about this Komplett.co.uk - Upgrade Kit Intel Pentium D 820, Mainboard, 1024MB DDR2, PCI-Express, VGA

https://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/94647#bundles

that bundle was attractive to me based on price, and what people said about the mobo / cpu.

my case and psu are new as is my agp FX5200 and one of my hdd's

I would personally suggest waiting and saving a bit more money...to get a bit bigger budget...get a bigger computer that will last a bit longer...it's what I would do/have done many times.

aww but my old Athalon is soooooooo slow...

i thought of investing ain a good AM2 board getting a lowish spec processor and a small ish amount of ram and upgrading the rest later.

although i couldn't find an AM2 board with an AGP slot which would mean upgrading my GFX card too.
