I was also looking at buying a decent ~AM2 mobo and the cheapest chip and ram, with a view to upgrading the ram and chip at a later date

Patience will save you money and aggravation.
The Mobo/RAM/Video-card are all interwoven when it comes to performance. So much so that to buy a great board and then put a minimal chip +RAM in it would be a waste. I don't think they make an AM2 board with AGP-- there was a dual-interface one-- but I read it did not perform well.
