Default Buying a new motherboard

I'm about to buy a new motherboard and need some help. Most of the motherboards I've found so far are compatible with AMD Athlon 64 CPUs. I haven't found boards that are compatible with Athlon XP, wich is what I have. Can I use Athlon 64 motherboards with my Athlon XP CPU? Any recommendations?

Howdy Stian,
If I may ask are going to be upgrading sooner or later to a AMD 64 bit cpu?
Just asking to try and save you some money in long run to get a cpu as well as the motherboard.

If I can't get a MB that supports both Athlon XP and 64 I might as well wait until I upgrade my CPU before I buy a new MB. Thanks for the replies.

You can get on that supports them on socket like the board below

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813153035

this way when you go to upgrade your cpu you wont have to get another board as well./

So... If i get a MB with both a 754 and 939 socket I can use it with either Athlon 64 or XP CPU? Wich is wich? 754 for Athlon 64 or the other way around? I'm asking because I need to find a MB in an online store wich has a limited range of MBs for sale, and I'd like to know what I'm looking for. This is all very new to me. Thanks!

Hey Stian!
My welcome to PC Helpforum!

Yeah most 64 processors are socket 939.
And the newer Athlon XP, and Sempron, are 754.
There are also a few 64 processors of socket 940, but I'd suggest you to buy a 939 socket as there are more compatible products.
