Question Sequence>awdflash>chipset driver> bios update

I have a Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe and am a bit confused as to the sequence and fear the reprocussions of a mistake in proceedure. First I understand that I have to update awdflash.exe to v1.14. Then I think I am supposed to update the chipset driver which I am confused as to which choice to make since that latest is Beta 6.66 for Windows XP 64 (will only use win xp) and is a 79.9 mb file (another problem I still have dial up and I don't know if I will live that long until download completes) . The next version is v6.34 which is also for 64 bit drivers. Asus recommends: For WinXp 32 bit system, please download and update chipset drivers v6.65 or later. Confused again since other than the drivers above (which offer 64 bit driver support) the other versions are older tha v6.65. Third step is to update Bios to version v1016 which is the latest for the Athlon 64 x2 4200 revE6 or 4400E6. Can someone help clarify? By the way I notice that another 4200 is an E4 designation. I decided to go with the E6 part because both the 4600 and 4800 use this. Can you explain the advantage in performance in the E6 over the E4.

Hey there davidstark

Firstly could you tell us what processor you are using in this board, is it the AMD Athlon 64 or other?

Secondly, your question 1 and 3 are techincally the same thing, awdflash is used to flash/update the BIOS.
  • what is the main reason for you wanting flash the bios, is it souly because you have seen an update on the Asus website or are you wanting to run a newer processor which aren't currently supported by the current BIOS version?
Thirdly, chipset drivers, personally I wouldn't use the Beta version for something like chipset drivers, mainly because Beta means it is a test, so they haven't gotten rid of all the bugs yet. If there are problems it will crash windows quite often in theory.
I would use v 6.34, the answer to my first question will help determine whether you need to download the 64 bit or 32 bit version.

I haven't bought processor yet but my choice will be between an Athlon X2 4400 or a 4200 (BTW each version has a cpu with 256 L1 cache and another with 128 L1 cache) The part printed in red indicates Asus recomendations and I know (somewhat) that beta versions can have flaws. My biggest dilema is the size of the chipset driver file being 79.9mb Large and I was confused as to how I could put this on floppy's for the update of the chipset driver which is required before bios update. It doesn't make sense. I would seem that I could do this update after operating system install unless I can burn it to a CD since the motherboard has a CD which has earlier chipset driver which can be installed during BIOS phase.

So you are gona use the "normal" 32bit version of XP? In that case the 64bit drivers are the wrong ones.
The "64 bit" drivers are not for an 64 bit proc , but for the 64 bit version of XP.

And you would have to install windows first , then install the chipset driver , and after that update the bios.

Thank you I thought logically that I would have to install OS before I could update chipset drivers and then flash bios (awd flash) and finally bios update. I was just worried about it recognizing my CPU (4200 X2) and being able to install OS before the update.

You wont have any problems installing windows before the chipset drivers , that is the normal sequence of installing them. But just to check , what kind of HD are you gone use? If you are using a sata drive you will need to load the drivers for that with a floppie during the installation of windows.
