Default Motherboard upgrade help

hi everyone,
I recently purchaced a new graphics card (6600gt AGP) to replace my old Geforce 4. However, my current motherboard only supports AGP 4x and below which i belive is holding back the 6600gt back considerably. So, i thought, the answer is simple, upgrade the motherboard to one supporting AGP 8x and P4 socket 478. But then it struck me, will i be able to use my product recovery cd to reinstall Windows XP with the new motherboard?

Here are my PCmark05 specs. if it helps:

Any help would be appreciated, as until i have this clarified i cannot proceed.

Hello and welcome to PCHF noob.

What is the make/model of your PC, e.g Dell?

If you are unsure then run everest which you can find in `Inside your PC` under my signature.

You should still be able to use the recover CD to install Windows, the only thing it won't install is your drivers.

Default pc model

I have a Medion Power Plus 2880.
The rest of the specifications are in my PCmark05 results.
If that fails then here is a breif summary:
Pentium 4 2.8Ghz
512Mb SDRAM (in an ancient DIMM slot on the current Motherboard)
60Gb HDD
The current motherboard is an MSI MS-6719.

Ps. I noticed, when i'd ran PCmark05, that my P4 has Hyperthreading technology available but disabled. Could i enable it once the new motherboard was fitted?

I'm afraid I can't find much information on your motherboard, would you be able to run this program and post the the results onto the forum in a text file.

Just incase you are interested here is a brief explanation about Hyperthreading:

Could i enable it once the new motherboard was fitted?
I read that the Hyperthreading can be enabled on the BIOS on some systems, not sure yet whether your current motherboard will support it but it is worth going through your BIOS and checking.
Otherwise I am sure a new motherboard will support it.

I ran the program, however when i attempted to attach it to this post i was confronted with "file upload error".
despite your efforts, i am beginning to think that i should scrap the upgrading idea and simply buy a new computer with AGP 8x (3.0) and a decent CPU etc.
My friend is selling one of his recent builds for ?300 and it consists of:
Athlon XP 2800 (socket A)
80Gb HDD
512Mb DDR RAM
21" CRT monitor (which supports some trully scary resolutions!)
And most importantly AGP 8x.

Does this sound like a good deal to you?
Do you know anywhere good to look for a cheap base unit/pc?
Could i trade in my current pc (minus the graphics card)?

What file format were you trying to upload? What was the filesize? This feedback is important as we are constantly improving the site.

Thank you.

Sounds like a pretty good deal, especially seeing as though you will be getting a 21" monitor, pity it isn't TFT but hey.

Checkout these sites:

Yes I am sure you can, checkout that CEX site otherwise you could sell it on ebay.
