I had a similar problem with my AMD 64 3200 CPU. I tried installing XP but it was a copy from a friend...at a guess it seems as if there's an inbuilt safeguard against copied OSs...but thats a guess. I had to install windows 98, and then later when I could afford it invest in an original XP.
