Temp sensor confustion...

ok heres is the situation...
CPU - xp 3000 400fsb.

Motherbourd monitor 5 found 3 bourd sensors. Im trying to figure out witch is the CPU temp sensor.

1 - starts out random low numbers and steadys out at random 20s(24) at startup idling..... at full load it steadily increasess to 47c max

2 - stays rock solid some were around 28 at idle..... 31c max at full load

3 - stays right around 34 - 38 idle..... 42c max at full load
-------------------------------------------------

Ok, this is why im realy confused... my bios always says CPU is somewere from 34 - 38c idle. (even right at startup for the first time)

so it looks like sensor# 3 has it right on the money... but the max sensor#3 goes to is 42c? usually doesnt go above 40c... Don't AMD's at full load usually get hotter? (i dont have experience with any other temp readings)

Sensor# 1 goes up to a temp witch i thought might look more like cpu full load at 47c but at idle it drops back down to about 28c. and when i start up the comp, or restart. sensor1 is all randome like... -11c to 4c to 16c were it finally gets up to about 24c.... also, sensor#1 is a lot less responsive then the others, i have to leave the comp at full load for maybe 10 to 15 minuts maybe more, b4 senosr1 will start rising... were as the others start rising withing a minute.

so let me hear what u guys think is the Temp snesore for the CPU, cause i could use some advice.

also wile we'r on the subject... MBM5 also can read my HDD's Temp readings, it reads the HD at right about 33c.... what is the Max HD Temps are suppost to go up to? if anyone knows just for my own reference.

Temperatures hey!!

Right I haven't really looked into temperatures since the old days when they first started putting the sensors on the board.

If you post your motherboard model number then I can check the manual and give you a proper answer?
(if you are unsure of the model number then download and run Belarc advisor and post the results here)

You can run this program and see whether it helps you. Hmonitor(temperature monitor)

In my mind CPU / motherboard temperatures are going to differ where ever you are in the world for the sole reason that they are influenced by the "outside" temperature as well.
The reason I say this is because I used to live below the equator and the CPU temperatures were constantly above 50C degrees, now I am? in the UK the temps are much lower.

At the end of the day you just need to make sure that none of your temps go above the MAX rated temp, otherwise it could cause problems.
(so keep a regular check on your fans e.t.c)

I have read that 85C is the Athlon XP 3000+'s maximum die temperature rating. (So you are safe)

its a Soyo Sy-KT600 Dragon plus V2.0 ,
# on back = SY-K7VKPE

Im not conserned about the temp readings... What im trying to do is figure out witch Sensore is the CPU temp sensor. Im confused between sensor 1, and 3. I figured someone with more experiene may beable to give me some insignt.

becuase sensor 2 is stead at 28c i figure that has to be case temp. (room temp here right now is always about 65f, 19*c). and my guess is sensore 1 cant be the CPU sensor because at idle it goes bellow 28c. but at max sensor 1 goes to 47c. so im confused.

maybe im gana have to unplug all my case fans, and let it get as hot as i can get it ( cause its always so cool here at this time of year) , and run the tests again.

but im still gana need some clerification if possible between these 2 sensore if anyone knows.

EDIT: is the bios sapost to be the most accurate? becauae sensor 3 reads exactly the same temp as the CPU bios temp reading, only thing is i cant read bios wile im loading the cpu, but at idle i know there the same.

I must have been having a bad day yesterday, I have figured out what you mean.

Yes the BIOS "Health Monitor" is supposed to be very accurate, so you could use that as a template. Basically write down what temps are associated with what device and compare them to MBM5.

When you installed MBM5 did you choose your motherboard from the list provided?

Another way of doing could be to download another motherboard temp monitor which only displays the bear essentials e.g. Speedfan

You could then compare the temps to the MBM5 and give the sensors names from there.

Let us know how you get on?

I found this on another site, the guy was using MBM5 with the same board as you.
MBM5 doesn't work well with this board for some reason...the system temp is consistent at about 25C, but the CPU temp jumps all over the place. The lowest I saw it was 9C, the highest was 112C...LOL! Soyo doesn't offer monitoring software for this model board. I just installed Speedfan & it shows the CPU at 34C & system at 27C. I rebooted & checked the BIOS & the CPU temp there is also 34C

---EDIT--- Try that Monitor that I posted in my previous post, "Hmonitor" it displays everything with a names. e.g CPU, Mainboard, HDD

Thx for the input.

Note- on my first post i mixed up sensors 1 and 3... 1 is the stead sensor, 3 is unsteady.

I figured it out though.

I disconnected all the case fans, so case tempature built up to 39c full load. and what sensor3 did that it didnt do befor is it gradually built up to 58c then it dropped back down to 20c and kept cycling like that. sensor1 idled at 45c and built up stead to 54c full load. so sensor 1 is CPU temp.

strange though when i pluged all the fans back in and restarted, sensor1 doesnt cycle. but is still pritty random.

-wile were on the topic, if any one knows, post what your max case temperature ever went up to with all your fans pluged in during for example - summer time(85F/30c room temp or higher). so i have reference to were i should set the max case temp alarm in MBM5.

i didnt need to install any other temp programs cause i was pritty shur MBM5 reads all the temps fine, its just associating the right sensor with the aplication that was confusing.. iv used speedfan on a diff computer that MBM5 didnt support and with any Temp program you have to go threw the same proccess anyway, so i dont think it would of helped me much to install more programs... lots of ppl dont realize with some programs that thy default to reading witch temperatur it assumes is CPU temp, but thats not the case in all situations. example - the CPU temp on a diff computer running speedfan read 4 sensors, and senor 3 was the CPU, not 1.
