Default [Conversation] Shall i upgrade from substandard Brookdale 1845 Motherboard?

I am currently upgrading my system. Before i upgrade the sound and graphics cards, should i upgrade the motherboard. It is an Intel Brookdale i845. I know its not too hot by todays standards. If so can anyone point me in the direction of a good motherboard that is not too expensive.

Also a question that has probably been discussed hundreds of times here; Shall i go for a pentium 4 or an athlon. I currently have a pentium 4 2.0ghz. I've heard that athlons are quicker.

Is there a certain speed processor that anyone can recommend?

cheers.

Ahhh...the old chicken and egg....shall I, shan't I.....

Hardware prices are currently very low and so if you were confident enough to dip your toe in the "home-built" market then you could save yourself a packet! That said, you really must know what you are doing or it could all end in tears :sad2:

BUDGET is the key here - do you have a budget that will allow you to upgrade your motherboard along with the other things? You never ask a geek (me ) if you should "upgrade your system"...I will always say YES!!. If you feel that the money is there and you actually need the added performance then yes, why not. Upgrading your motherboard will give you a certain amount of future proofing, but sadly not much.

Athlon vs Pentium - yup, an age old arguement. Comes down to personal choice as the row that will develop in here if I argue for or against just ain't worth it!! (p.s. - I am an Athlon fan - BIG time)

As for recommending a certain speed of processor - go for the fastest that your budget & motherboard will allow - simple.

I read somewhere that Pentiums were better than their respective Athlon counterparts in most apps until the 64/FX series arrived........ Also, you might want to check your mobo support capabilities. If it can't support bus speeds of above 400MHz, its no point upgrading your proc.

I echo the comments hear but add the following:

1) Make sure you have at least 512MB of RAM.
2) The fast HD you can afford.
3) AMD processor (Intel are expensive and do not match all AMD on most fronts)

Given the speed of most CP components you will be hard pushed to build a slow system!!!!
