Default Laptop Monitor Green lines

Hi, I have a HP DV9700 Entertainment notebook. It's packed with a Nvidia 8600 512mb GPU, and is very well known for over heating, and for something with the GPU going bad. I've been getting green lines through my monitor, but primarily only when i move the screen to view it better, after i let go of the monitor the green disapears and my monitor looks completely regular again. I can squeeze certain areas of my monitor and move it and it makes the green lines less noticeable. Basically my question is, does this sound like a monitor issue, or a GPU issue? (The lines DO on occasion pop up when theres nothing moving the laptop, but very rarely.

I've been on HP specific websites that say they think it's my GPU but i get the feeling that they really just think that because it's a common issue. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

Welcome to the Forum chrisw!

In dealing with a laptop such as you are, pressing on the screen itself it really not something that you should be doing!

A question.. what made you think to do so?

Whatever HP sites you have been on, and I will take the assumption that they were forum or such, that said something like that was the GPU apparently haven't a clue as to what they are talking about.

Do not believe all that you read in such places as that please.

Lines as you are describing are the monitor... most likely needs replacement.

I hope this helps some.

Please let us know how you choose to proceed

Edit=> A question.. you are aware what LCD is, yes? Liquid Crystal Display

With my laptop the monitor doesn't move as freely as most, you have to use a little bit of pressure to get it to move, i noticed in some places it would make the screen less "glitchy" and pressed slightly harder and it took the lines out. I know that it's bad to press on the screen but sometimes it's annoying to get it to move(i press on it through the back), i'm definitely not going to be doing this with the next screen i have regardless how annoying it is .

You're correct it was a forum that apparently didn't have any HP techs, just people that wanted help. It sounded way off to me as to how a GPU could only be effected when i'm touching the monitor lol.

This definitely helps, it reassured me that i won't be spending $400 to fix a 1000 laptop , thank you very much.

I plan on ordering a new LCD after mine goes out from what i've been seeing it shouldn't be a problem to replace, pop the cover off, remove some tape, disconnect the wire connecting the screen, remove 4 screws and do the opposite to install

I had a slight knowledge of what LCD's were but thank you for the link, very informative. I truly appreciate your post thank you for taking time out to help me!

I must say chris, that is a lot more information than we usually get.

While forums are a great way to look at things, you just have to be aware of the information that some provide.. We are, by far, the most comprehensive collection of crackers, wackes, hackers and just plain great folks that will certainly be able to help you!

Yeah, ok.. blatant promoting of our Forum!

I am looking forward to seeing how you fare in this..

Leaving this open as it is for all to see, and keeping watch.

I'll note it to our great Tech Staff for a look... sound good?

Thank you for your patience

Hi

The Notebook you have is not on the affected notebooks lists from HP:
HP NVIDIA affected Notebooks.

The symptoms you describe can also be a loose connection (Screen to M/B, underneath the switchboard cover), or the ribbon cable behind the LCD panel.
HP Pavilion DV7 Maintenance and Service Guide

Connect the Notebook to a Monitor and see if the distortion appears there as well. If not, it's just the screen, if yes, is the O/B graphics (system board) for sure, but could be that the screen is defective too (no way to tell before replacing the system board that is).

I do not know what fora (forums) you've been browsing, some are REALLY good and we also look around for information wherever we can find it in order to assist you, but reliable fora (forums) provide either direct links to the manufacturer's site related to the issue discussed, or document the offered/suggested solution with hard data (and as Sir Trews so colorfully pointed out we do that a lot here).

I posted on some "off" hp forum in this section:
Display and video - HP Support Forum

I have two threads, and only can find one of them it looks like my second thread might have been deleted? .

I posted on one more but i forgot to book mark it.

I searched google "HP 9700 recalls" and there weren't any but it seemed like there were many people with GPU/overheating issues with this particular laptop, maybe it's just a bad group of users who knows? lol.

Thank you! i'll be doing some tests, and checking some connections i'll get back to you guys as soon as i can. I appreciate it very much, thank you for the ideas, and even the guide in how to do it
