Hello Pmiralle, welcome back to the forum!
I don't know know a huge amount about connecting computers to HDTV's, but i know that different TVs support different resolutions with VGA. You should check the maximum resolution your TV model supports with VGA (you should be able to find that in your HDTV manual) and then adjust the laptops resolution accordingly  If that does not help, post back and I am sure one of our fantastic techs will be able to help you further!
