Default Monitor black once start-up

Hi guys

I recently bought a new tv/monitor and it worked fine for the first few days. But since yesterday when i boot it up, it shows the initial startup things on screen (like the phillips logo etc) but then i get a no signal sign as soon as it gets to the point where I am supposed to put my password in. The pc is working fine as I can hear it boot up when i type in the password (opening sound comes from the speakers).
So i booted up in safe mode, and it worked fine. I did a system restore to roll back to the last version of windows, rebooted my pc and it worked!

Last night, i turned the pc off and it re-installed the latest update for windows again. In the morning it didnt work. so i did the old safemode trick, went back to the last update and for some reason it still didnt work.

So basically i can work my pc in safe mode but not otherwise.

Other things I have done to try and fix:
Ran driveragent and it said the driver for "Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 67xx Capture Device" in sound, video and controllers is out of date. When i right click this driver and try to update it think its the latest version.
I downloaded the driver that driver agent gave me but when i run setup it offers me loads of options of different pc cards and i dont know which is the right driver, or whether this has anything to do with my problem.

Can anyone help me please?

Assuming XP

Go:

Start - Run -(type) sfc /scannow (with the space)(Enter)

sfc = System File Check and fixes operating files.

It may ask for your original XP CD

ah ok i think i have found the route of the problem. People on the net say they have trouble using my tv as a monitor when you have the res above 600 x 800 (or whatever it is). Now i think about it i did change the res before it all went wrong.
The problem is now i can't change it back. If i boot in safe mode it wont let you change the res (or it does but it keeps switching it back) and if i boot in normal mode i can't see anything

Anyone know how i might fix it?

Try a System Restore, obviously, prior to other stuff you did..........

You can boot into safemode and uninstall the video driver for your video card, boot back into normal mode, it should reset the resolution, and then just reinstall the video driver.

Or, you can try using an external temporary monitor.
