Unhappy Connecting laptop to tv

I have purchased a cable which goes from my 15 pin VGI slot to a YPBPR slot on my TV, thinking that I could display what I see on my laptop screen on a 32" screen. Before it had a pink and green mix of swirled pixels on the screen, but after changing the resolution it now says out of range. My theory is that the cable supports 1080p where my TV only supports up to 1080i. The Nintendo WII also used the YPBPR slot for enhanced definition at 740p which my TV loves.

Is there a way to lower the quality which it uses or am I completely wrong and it's something unfixable and I need to start again?
Pleas help!

Hello and welcome to PCHelpForum.

The issue maybe your laptop will not support such a large TV connected to it.

Could you try an update of your graphics card driver.

I have marked your thread as "Open" in readyness for the great Tech Team and wondefull helpfull members who will help you with this issue.

JB.

Hey jorge, welcome to PCHF.

I'm no expert when it comes to YPBPR connectivity, but I've always been under the impression a converter box is required if your connecting using VGA. If you need to run at a particular resolution, then you'll need scaling capability which can not be provided with a cable, otherwise you'll only be able to operate at set resolutions and frequencies (refresh rate) that are supported by the TV as well as the cable or device.

EDIT: Marked as Answered.
