Hello, like everyone else here, I am trying to fix my laptop/pc. It’s a
Sony Vaio laptop. I’m not sure if the problem is ram related, but before anything happens, SOMETIMES the screen LCD is working, and sometimes not. I’ve tried booting up a disk but with no avail. I’ve tried pulling out the ram and redoing it, with some luck, but then on the 2nd try, once again nothing. I’d continue further, but I don’t have the slightest idea on how to do it. BTW I think the model is a PCG-9RFL

Welcome to PCHF. We have both a wonderful team of techs as well as a very helpful and experienced user community. I am sure that we can help you sort out the problem.

First of all, can you boot into Safe Mode? You do that by tapping the F8 key during startup. If you get to the startup menu, use the arrow keys to navigate to Safe Mode and press Enter.

If you can get into Safe Mode, it will give us some places to look for the problem.

If you cannot boot the laptop up at all, that is a whole other kettle of fish. Looking forward to your reply,

Anyway as I was saying, this laptop is pretty old, I think, and I'm hoping this is a think that is fixed easily, but apparently not so. Sometimes the screen will show, saying "Windows is resuming" from an OS that was operating like 5 years ago, and will not respond. I am trying to install a new OS, but whenever I try, the screen is not working.

If your intent is to wipe and install new OS, what are you going to install? Dos the pc have a floppy drive?

I would think that if we go to the DOS level, then reformat in NTFS, you will have a clean workspace, and the video issues will most likely resolve themselves.

If the problem is either the vid card, or the vid drivers, or the monitor, the reinstall will tell us what your next steps shoudl be.
