replacing my laptop screen
so i don't know how, but my laptop screen got cracked. i'm pretty upset. anyway, i understand replacing it could end up being more costly than its worth. the computer was only 350 to start with, and after looking around on the internet i can see that buying a replacement screen could cost as much as 300 dollars.
first off, how does this make any sense? how can the screen be 80% of the cost???
secondly, are there any cheaper alternatives
to taking to best buy and paying them 700 dollars? or buying a 300 dollar screen? i'm looking on ebay for an old presario that i could use the screen from, would that work? if so, how can i tell what type of screen would work and what wouldn't? thanks a lot guys!

Re: replacing my laptop screen
Hey alec,
First of all, I really wouldn't recommend replacing the screen yourself, it's a very delicate process. The Presario, as with most laptops will need to be stripped right down just to get at it, I really would leave that one to the pro's alec, unless you already have experience in that area.
You'll find that getting many electrical parts that are specific to only one manufacturer generally costly. This is one of the downfalls of buying a laptop over a PC. Laptop parts are smaller, and specific to a manufacturer, whereas PC parts are made at a manageable size and can easily be replaced by several different manufacturers = competativity. When there is no competitiveness, why sell your parts cheap? It's also another way to get your customers to buy extended warranties.
I'm not sure what you use the laptop for, but have you considered just buying a normal PC screen? It would mean that your laptop would need to stay in one place, but it's a cheap way to solve your problem.

Re: replacing my laptop screen
one guy says don't change it, its too hard, the other guy says do it, its easy. i found this ebay auction
for about 150. it doesn't seem that hard to change it. and this is a price i feel like i would be willing to pay.
does that seem like a god way to go?
i use the laptop for DJing. i have another laptop, but i don't want to use it for Djing because i'm basically out at bars and parties, and i don't want any dumb drunk to break my better, more expensive laptop.

Re: replacing my laptop screen
Ok its like this as you remove old laptop screen draw the connections and what wire goes were as in what colour is connected to wich point on the laptop,on a peice of paper. So you do not get mixed up or lost.
There are several screws wich hold the screen to main laptop body.Make sure you do not unscrew anything that is not laptop screen.
Take your time.
You can post pictures if you need to and we can help from them to.
I said yes it can be done as I have replaced laptop screens.
(But thats my job)

Re: replacing my laptop screen
I completely disagree. I know the Presario's can be a bit of a nightmare, and it's a lot of money to screw up for such a delicate process, but like Jelly Bean said, there's nothing wrong with posting a few pictures of what is happening if you get stuck at any point.

Re: replacing my laptop screen
It's not that hard guys simply remember where it all goes. I have done hundereds as warranty repairs for HP and other maufactures. With most of them it's a simple as removing the lugs next to the screen removing a few screws and a cover or 2 in plug a couple of leads remove the screen from the laptop re,ove screen casing fitt new panel it will take an hour or 2 but it is not that hard in my opinion as long as you have used a screw driver before hex head keys before!
What model is the laptop?
