Default Flickering LCD monitor

Hey all,

This morning I turned my PC on and the following happened..

The image on the monitor would only appear for a fraction of a second then go blank until it refreshed for the next boot up page where the same happend all the way to the desktop.

So it will only show an image for a split second before going blank again..so I had to turn it off again because i couldnt do anything. There was no "signal error" or "no signal" message on the blank screen.

Then i tried again 15 mins or so later and hey presto it worked... well kinda. Now it flickers constantly like an ond CRT set to 40Hz or something... sods law as im writing this its setted and now looks fine.
However in the last few months it has developed a habit of flickering when the monitor is turned on, bought back from standby etc for a few seconds and then settling. I Initially ignored this as I assumed windows had changed some setting as it tends to do and it wasnt really a big problem for me but now after this mornings events I am thinking the 2 are linked.

My thoughts are that the monitor is developing a fault....as everything else appears to work normally.

The pc specs are ..

Win XP
AMD 3000
512 Mb ram
Radeon X1600 PRO 512 Mb
Sharp 17" LLT17A4 TFT LCD monitor (6 yr old now)

Any Ideas? Is this a common fault with LCD monitors? Ive done a google search but not come up with anything.. couldnt find anything in these forums either (it would help if people put key words in the subject line other than "help I have a problem")

Thanks for any help guys.
SV.

Hi there, if your confident enough to open your PC i would remove the graphics card and reseat it. Next check the pins inside the connector of the cable aren't bent as this can also be a common fault. Lastly check all the cables are securly plugged in.

Right graphics card reseated, all connection ok no bent pins. I've just come back to the computer now and its not working... The monitor image just appears for a second then dissappears as described above.
why dont things just work?.

I blame my brother.. since this morning hes used my PC , this PC im on now, my dads expensive camera, and my car radio.. none of which are working properly now. He steadfastly denied doing anything to it thought.

any other ideas?.. im going to see if i can switch monitors with the one im using now.. that will at least rule out the graphics card.

Ive just plugged the suspect monitor into the other PC (this one) and its doing the same thing.. flickers for a sec then goes blank. whats it cost to get things like this looked at (if i go to PC world for example) or is it a case of just getting a new monitor???

Orrrrr does anyone have and magic ideas that might fix it.

Could be that the monitor has a blacklit fault. Mine had this but instead of just flickering as you describe when i powered it on, the screen would just go white. fortunatly for me Proview replaced it.

I guess you could try going into PC World and getting them to test it, cant do any harm.
