Default monitor won't work on different pc

Bought a HitachiPrius DS71J about 3 years ago. It has a HD-D monitor with a dvi cable. That pc is toast, but the monitor is still good. Recently bought a cheap Everex with a nvidia GeForce 6100 video card. The Everex only has a connector for a vga monitor. I bought an adapter, so I could use the monitor from my Hitachi pc. I connected everything, but nothing. The only thing I could see on the screen was a "no sync" message. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.Btw, I bought both PCs in Japan.

Hi pcrookie, welcome to the PCHF.

Either the cable that you've got on the monitor doesn't support being converted to VGA...or the adapter is broken.

Do you not have another plug on the monitor for VGA? Almost all monitors, if having DVI, also have VGA...3 years ago VGA was still firmly the standard in all PC's.

im guessing that the converter that you got is actually designed to go from a dvi port to vga, but the dvi port will actually output in analouge signal, it isnt really converting anything, it just arranges the cables, you will need an actual converter box, but like garhar said you should have a vga port on the monitor

first of all, thanks for the info. I couldn't find a vga port on the monitor. However, I did explain my situation to a person working at the electronics store and he said sometimes manufacturers design it so their monitors will only work with the same brand. On the other hand, many of my pc knowledgable friends told me otherwise. I'm still confused

monitors will work with any brand with the correct output, and i believe that the problem you are experiencing is due to the fact that the dvi port on your monitor wont accept analouge signals like it would be getting with the "converter"

After reading around your predicament has become far more clear, integrated video cards like the 6100 do not support DVI out, so i have some bad news for you, you will either need to get a new monitor that has either DVI-I or vga input (DVI-I being a dvi port that supports analouge input) or a new video card that supports DVI out, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, for your sake i hope i may be wrong and someone else will have a good suggestion, but i fear that i may be right
