Put power and battery back in and it came up with a blue screen saying that there was a hardware conflict. It then went off and when i turned it back on again, the black screen came up.

Do you have a monitor you can plug into the back?

I suspect you tried this first, but it might be defaulting to external output. You can usually change this on a laptop by holding the function key and pressing the output key (sometimes F5, on my Thinkpad it's F7). It's a little picture of a screen over one of the F keys.

Its actually my sisters laptop (i'm the geeky sis lol) i tried it on an external monitor but that showed a blank screen.
I tried the F8 safe mode thingy but that didn't respond.
Will try the F5 in the morning (as this old bird needs her sleep lol)..

hmm, if an external monitor didnt work then it may be that the video card is fried, just my opinion, but if this is the case it may require a brand new laptop

EDIT: and if the backlight died there would still be something on the screen, and definately on the external monitor
