Default second monitor trouble

Hello,
I have recently hooked up my laptop to a second monitor but there is a slight problem. My laptop screen is a widescreen but the monitor I am using is a regular one so the screen is stretched past view on the regular monitor. I have tried to fix it by using the format option on the monitor and by adjusting it on the monitor settings. Any ideas on how to fix this?

tried stretching the screen and it doesnt make it all the way, changing the resolution doesnt work either and changes it anything bigger than 1024 says that is uncompatible
