Default monitor goes...weird, when i change resolution

The best way that I can describe weird is that it is like when a TV doesn’t have a signal and you get the black and white fuzziness, except that with my monitor it is in colors. I have a 17' Sceptre that is analog, and an nvidia7900GT that is DVI. So I have to use an adapter. I've been thinking about getting a widescreen anyways, but I want to know if it will fix my problem and I can’t find anyone who has heard of what my monitor is doing. It isn’t exactly when I change the resolution, it happens when I pull up most, but not all games, or, if I change the resolution in the game. Sometimes, I can crtl alt del, and then hit escape to get back to the game and it will be just fine, some games do not to it at all, some games if I turn off anti-aliasing it wont do it, some do it no matter what I do. I have not had a chance to try another monitor, I have an old crt but when I hook it up, it says something about being out of range. Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas as to what the problem may be?

P.S. It seems to be getting worse. Games that did not used to have this problem now do. The crtl alt del fix works less often than it used to.

Hello mrice895,

Welcome to PCHF.

Make sure that your monitor actually supports the resolution and frequency that your trying to change to. You'll find that *all* monitors have a maximum resolution and a range of frequencies that can be used. If you go outside these settings, you will normally experience an error "out of range", a fuzzy or blank screen. Right click on your desktop and go to Properties, Settings tab, Advanced followed by the Monitor tab. You can change your frequency / refresh rate here, which is normally between 60 - 75hz.

Yes, I know the specifications of my monitor and am not exceeding them at any time in any way. The CRT monitor is the one that gave the out of range error, which, i now realize that it was. I fixed the settings, and tried again, however, the CRT monitor behaved in exactly the same way that my LCD does. I have tried several different adapters, which make no difference. I am hoping that perhaps for some reason it just doesnt like the adapters that i use, which are the cheap ones that came with my monitor and motherboard. I have a freind that was a DVI monitor and hopefully i can get ahold of him to test this.

I can't see the cable being the cause of your problems, they normally either work, or don't, as long as you have a ferrite bead towards the plug of that monitor cable. What frequency and resolution did you try setting it to when you had your problems?

That is just the thing it cannot be the frequency or resolution because it works until I try to boot up a game. As I said it is also getting worse because a game that used to not have any problems with this, just today, started having this problem and yet I changed no settings.
