I'm inclined to believe that it's the video card just can't handle that res. The fact that it did for a short period of time isn't all that good. Your video card is fairly old now, and i'd suggest upgrading it.

FYI: You've missed around 6 series of nvidia cards...and about 50 releases of the cards.
how do i find out if a video card im looking to buy supports the native res of my LCD monitor? will it specify on the box?

another thing, i read on another forum that someone else was in the same spot as me. someone suggested that the native res is only supported by his video card if he used DVI. I dont understand but this is what im getting from it. I know definitely that my card supports high res (including what i need which is the native). So does it mean that since my card doesnt have DVI and im using VGA that my card wont support it? i dunno im confused.
