No Problem Free, that's what we're here for.

Can you describe the flicker a little more thoroughly? Does it cover the entire screen? Is it completely white, or does it show signs of color? Is it intermittent, or consistent? Does it happen immediately, or only after the laptop has been on for a while?

It may be that the fact you just added memory and a new harddrive is irrelevant, and you are having LCD trouble. It is also possible that your vid cable has come loose. Your answers will help to narrow down a possible cause.

Looking forward to your reply,

Hey Free,

That does indeed help a good deal. Have you tried plugging in a monitor to the back of the laptop to see if the flickering reproduces? That would help a lot in determining what exactly is causing the problem.

Austinpctech at Experts Exchange had a wonderful explanation of how a laptop screen works, and what could go wrong. (Our thanks to Experts Exchange and Austin).

You would have to be more specific to make an accurate diagnosis. To be more specific, it helps to undertand the working components of an LCD screen. To keep it simple, you really only have 5 components that work to produce a normal image on a laptop. The LCD display that displays the image. The backlight which is a small fluorescent tube running along the base of the LCD display. It's job is to produce a bright white light in an upward direction across the LCD display. You have an inverter that provides the power to the backlight which generally either works or does not. Then you have the video cable that is connected to a video board or the video section on the motherboard. So my questions would be, does the LCD image flicker or the white light from the backlight flickering? Is the backlight a bright white light or does it have a hint of red, orange, or pink to it? If you plugged in a CRT or other flat panel monitor to the back of your laptop, does the problem reproduce on that screen? Does this problem typically or not occur when the computer is hot or cold?
In your case, the video card or cabling seems to be the most likely suspect, see if you can locate a monitor to test out.
