Default LCD Monitor - gray patches on black screens

Hi there.

I have had a Samsung Syncmaster 19 "LCD for around six months now.

I normalyy just have a plain black desktop, and a few weeks ago I noticed a small patch of gray just to the bottom right of the center of the screen. This was only really noticable when i look at the monitor from the left at quite an angle.

The patch has since grown larger, and is now noticable even when the screen is viewed straight on (which kinda distracts me as I like to play a lot of space-sims).

I've not noticed any other real issues with colours as yet, but given it seems to be worsening I'm not too helpful.

As a general rule is this kind of thing covered by warranties - ie is the monitor defective, or is it just part of the LCD monitor world??

Hi, I think the best thing is to speak to the company you bought the monitor from, this is not normal and it could be the sign of a defective monitor. Best to get it exchanged whilst still under warranty. Also, check that the cable connecting the monitor to the PC is seated correctly and remove the power for 5 mins.

Yup, Samsung monitors are of high image/colour quality and for a "gray patch" to appear like this is quite abnormal. Contact the company you got it from, or Samsung themselves. It will still be under warranty.

Get it replaced if you can.

Small update -

just got off the phone with the suppliers tech support as my tower has to go back anyway for a blown PSU. They say it's possible the graphics card might have been causing this - is this true or am i just being fobbed off?

it is a possibility, but unlikely.

Can test it witha 2nd monitor ifyou've got one around the place.
