The vga calbe on a monitor has a round piece before the hd-15 connector. What is it and what is the purpose. I was going to buy a replacement cable. I noticed some have the device on the cable and some do not. what is the deal

From memory, and I may be wrong, it used to be a type of shield to help reduce static and extra voltage coming out of the 15 pin connector.

Technology has changed and some cable no longer have these or may have a very small round bit.

Maybe someone else has a more precise explanation and it but that is my theory.
