Default Brief display then standby!

Recently i have had so many problems with my PC, this is the current one and im sure it won't be the last.

When i turn my computer on i get a display of the black and white screen then the logo of the mothorboard (ASUS). Then nothing it goes onto standby, recently i turned it on and the same thing happened, so instead of powering off then on, after powering on i pressed restart and everything worked ok - so i did virus scans spyware ect. but found nothing. I also used tune up utilities to sort the registry out and all that type of stuff.

The next day i powered on and nothing but that didnt worry me because i thought if i press restart now it will work but it didnt. I have checked eveything is inserted properly and the power lights and fans are on and working.

The problems seemed to have started after i installed two new dvd drives from a previouse computer.

Can anyone help please?

David

Hody David,
Can you get into your BIOS and load the safe defaults?

Have you checked the connection between your monitor and video card?

No i don't think i can get into the bios, i have found out by replacing it with a working one that it is the hard drive. The hard drive is making a lot of weird noises so it sounds like maybe it is broken or warped. Do you think if i format it, it may fix it.

Also i was thinkin of in my other computer putting the problem hard drive as a slave to another hardrive in an attempt to get files off it. Do you think that would work?

Default Hardrive on slave won't let me into my documents - i need to backup

I have now put the hardrive from the computer with no display onto another computer as a slave drive to another, and it works fine, i have backed up most of the files i have the only problem is i can't get into 'my documents' it says "<path name> it is not accessable acess is denied" and in that folder are my most important files that need backing up, is there any way to get into this file. Also on my desktop i had my own breifcase which had a lot of files i need in, but to get to that you have to go through my documents and like i said before it won't let me. any ideas?

Does anyone have any ideas as to why my harddrive won't work in the other computer? Any help would be appreciated!

David

Have a look here for info on how to get access to those files again:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421

And if you use XP home then youll need this to be able to access the security tap:
http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/xpperm/xpPerm1.htm

And when installing the new dvd drives did you make sure all master and slave jumpers and cable locations where in order?
