Default Dual Monitors - Not reconizing onboard port

Hi! I have a problem.

I am trying to use dual monitors on my computer, however my computer is only reconizing the monitor I have plugged into my video card. It does not reconize the monitor port on my motherboard. I have tried plugging a single monitor into this port instead of the video card and the result is no display. Under device manager I have two display adapters:

Radeon 9800 Series
Radeon 9800 Series - Secondary

I tried extending my desktop to the secondary but that does not work.

Is there anyway I can get my computer to reconize the adapter for my onboard port? Is there something I can download (drivers, etc)? I went to Compaq's website but the drivers they had were not helpful.

My Computer:
Compaq Presario 6000z
Radeon 9800 Pro

If you need any other information just ask!

Thanks!

 Hi Unearthly,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a wonderful team of techs here and I am sure that we will be able to get you up and running.

First let's just work on getting the MOBO port to work. What I need you to do, is make sure that one of the monitors is plugged into the MOBO, then go to the Device Manager, under Display Adapters, check the properties of each of your adapters and make sure that they are both enabled, and working properly.

Next you will need to get into your BIOS, more than likely, unless they changed it, you will press F10 as you boot up to get to your BIOS. Then you will need to get to the VGA settings, and change it so that your MOBO is the one that boots up.

Save your changes and boot up the PC. You should now be able to see with the monitor attached to your MOBO. If not, it may be that you have a hardware conflict or a damaged Vid card on your MOBO.

We have a group of some amazing hardware guys, so post back with your results and we'll see what they have to say.

Thanks for the great welcome! Sure seems like a nice place here!

That's what I'm afraid of.

Both of the devices that I listed above are enabled and 'working properly'.

In the BIOS, to choose my primary display I have the choices:

PCI
AGP/Onboard

I tried both, and they only used the Video Card monitor port, even when I only had a monitor plugged into the MOBO port (which resulted in no display at all).

I am not sure if the two display adapters I have include my MOBO port, which I think may be the problem. Is there anyway for me to find out if this is the case? I was thinking maybe the plug and play aspect of my video card possibly overwrote my default display adapter drivers, but I don't actually know enough about display drivers to know for sure.

What can I do next?

Sure, I suppose that's possible, not ordinary, but possible. What is the MOBO that you have? If you don't know, you can do a Belarc test from my sig. It is probably something generic that Compaq used, but let's find out.

Look forward to your reply,

Radeon 9800 Series
Radeon 9800 Series - Secondary
They are both from youre card , not youre mobo's chip. Have a look in the bios if "onboard vga" is disabled.

But im not sure if you can use and the onboard , and the vga card at the same time though. Ive never tried it anyway.

I looked in the BIOS for such an option but didn't find it. When choosing the Primary Display it allowed me to choose AGP/Onboard so I wouldn't think that is the case.

I hope that's not the case, I'm pretty sure I have known others who used two monitors in the way I am trying (although with different computers).
