I am a Verizon customer, and have been looking at upgrading to the Treo 700p smartphone. Does anyone know if it is possible to get a smartphone without signing up for a montly data plan? I only want to have the PDA functions built into my phone, I do not want or need the email and web access on my phone. I know that I could out-right block data service on the phone, but would that block text messages as well?

Any help would be appreciated,

Yes, but if I upgrade through Verizon I can get the phone for $250. What I am wondering, is if I can get their phone without buying a data plan. Or, if I buy a phone from a 3rd party, can I activate the phone on my current account and not have to purchase a data plan?

I probably should have been more clear. What I want to do is this:

When I am eligible to upgrade my phone under verizon's New Every Two program, I want to transfer my current line to a smartphone without buying a monthly data plan. Is this possible?

If the upgrade scheme is the same as it is in the UK, then if you upgrade you phone basically all they do is send out the new phone and keep you on your current plan unless you tell them specifically you want to change your plan, as all you are doing is upgrading the hardware and not the plan

But just to be sure in case it works differently in the US i`d give them a call and ask them, just to make sure you dont get stuck with a plan you dont want
