Default Ram not registering

Hello

I have an E-machine W3506. It has an ATI Radeon Xpress 200 chipset with an Intel Celeron D Processor 352. It came with 512MB DDR2 PC4200 Ram. (1x512) upgradable to 2 GB.

I ordered two sticks of 1GB DDR2 PC4200 Ram from Crucial, using the advisor and everything ensuring it was the proper replacement.

I have placed each stick in each slot booting it up each time; every time perfect results. (1st stick in slot 1, 1st stick in slot 2, 2nd stick in slot 1, 2nd stick in slot 2) BIOS/Crucial show whichever slot being used and windows shows 1gb ram. (Therefore I know that both slots work, and both sticks are good)

My problem lies here. When both sticks are installed (they are identical). BIOS/Crucial show one slot as being empty, while windows still shows only 1GB. I have tried swapping them around, still same results. I have tried also using the old 512mb with a each 1GB stick in each slot in either order, each time same results.

I suspect this is an issue with my BIOS, but I am lost and have no idea.

I am currently at work so any tests will have to come later (around 6 CST). However, I am looking for anyone that may be able to help with the issue.

The PC is completely factory other than a GeForce 7600GS installed in the PCI-x slot. (and the ram).

Thank you.

Hello and welcome to PCHelpForum.

Does your mainboard have 4 slots? If yes try 1 stick in first slot, then second stick in 3 rd slot.

Do you mean you have mixed the RAM sticks 1 gig +1 512?

Your MAX RAM is 2 gig in total.

Does your board support mixed sized RAM sticks?

JB.

No. It has two. This is why I stated I have tried every possable configuration to test the new ram (1st stick in slot 1, 1st stick in slot 2, 2nd stick in slot 1, 2nd stick in slot 2).

Do you mean you have mixed the RAM sticks 1 gig +1 512?

I said i have also (meaning, in a last attempt to get something to show in the BIOS) I have tried using one new (1gb) and the old (512mb) stick together.

Your MAX RAM is 2 gig in total.

I know. I stated that in my post.

Does your board support mixed sized RAM sticks?

Yes. However, I stated I am attempting to use two identical sticks of ram. (2 x 1gb DDR2 PC4200)

Thank you for the reply.

With both sticks in please go back to:

Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com

What do they see?

I will give an exact copy/past when i get home.

However, the last time i did so it said slot 1 empty.

I know it is not empty. When i swapped the two sticks it still registered as slot 1 empty.

When i ran the crucial test with just one stick in (once in slot 1, once in slot 2), it gave me proper results back. It showed the single stick in the correct location with the other slot showing empty.

The problem only arrises when both are installed.

Is your computer showing 2 gig installed?

Why I ask is Crucial scan tells me I have only 2 gig RAM installed when my computer tells me I have 4 gig.

Crucial gives me wrong results.

Both Crucial and Windows show 1gb ram. Both Crucial and BIOS show one slot being empty.
