looong stressfull story short: vista wouldnt install, so we took 2gb stick out and it installed. putting the 2gb stick back in caused it to crash and not work. We wanted 4gb ram, so took it to pc world tech team and after a day, they gave it back completely broken, not even vista working with 2gb ram. not happy, we told them to take it back and put it ATLEAST to how it was.

anyway, now i have my pc back. 4gb ram, 32bit vista installed. We wanted 64bit vista on it, but it doesnt matter so much atm.
They claimed one of the ram sticks to be faulty and so replaced it

now, i recently bought cod4 (the game) and opened it, pc crashed. i restarted, and the pc kept on freezing at random points during startup. some times it would make it to the desktop, only to freeze whilst im on internet explorer, or scanning for virus's etc.

i have no idea whats happened, and have a limited knowledge of pcs. is it the ram causing trouble or the mb or anything?

i need this pc for uni, starting in a week, and could really do with sorting it out

thanks alot.

lol, on one restart, on the "restart safe mode/normal?" screen, it said "windows failed to start. recent changed to hardware/software may be the cause". then it started up fine. then crashed after 1min 58sec, and on restarting it, the 'hardware etc' error didnt come up this time.

im. so. confused.

Hello,

Just a few questions while you wait for Tech support to help you on your issue.

Could you list the make and model/speed of the new RAM.

Do you get any beep error codes when this new RAM is fitted.

Have you tried last knowm good config and or safe mode?

A 32 bit operating system only reconises 3.25 gig RAM.

Could you list full error codes were possible.

Thankyou.

JB.

ill open up the case and check the make of the new ram tomorrow when i have time.

pc world ppl fitted the new RAM in so i dont know about any beeps

ive tryed lask known good config on boot, and it will still occasionally crash, but much less then when cod was installed

i heard that too, we asked for 64bit to be installed but they installed 32bit. not my main concern atm though, the crashing is.

no error messages or anything, it just freezes. at random times.

could be one of several things.

A. You are overheating
B. incorrect motherboard settings
C. motherboard just doesnt like that particular memory.
I will do some digging and get back to you. In the meantime, Open you case while its on, and make sure all the fans are turning. Download speedfan, run it, and report any temperatures above 60 debgrees if you can before it freezes. It could also be your power supply is not supplying enough power, but one thing at a time.

theres a screen showing the temperature on the case, and its always 30-35oC..

ive just opened the baby up.. the 2nd 2gb ram stick is a different make to the 1st, but both are DDR2.

what i have noticed is that the 1st stick of ram is pushed in further then the 2nd stick of ram. it seems to be more snug. The pc recognises the 2nd RAM stick, but maybe this could be causing the crashes?

should i try to push it in further? is it worth taking a picture and uploading it if you dont know exactly what i mean?
