Hello Mrm3601

Welcome to PCHF
According to your specs, you already have 4 gigabytes of memory. And, you are using Windows XP. So there are two things to note...
One is, any 32-bit version of Windows XP or Vista will only address up to 3.12 gigs of memory. In order for Windows to show more than that, you would need to upgrade to the 64-bit version of Vista.
The second thing is....that is already a lot of memory for most purposes. In gaming, going with even more memory isn't going to make a difference. The highest end games even in Vista won't use more than 2 gigabytes of memory unless you have a bunch of programs running in the background. Which you shouldn't.
In Autocad, you may see performance increases with going with more memory. But it really depends on how massive the work is you're doing in Autocad.
The way to see how much memory is being used is...reboot your computer, don't open any additional programs except Autocad. In Autocad, open some work, then hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, click on the performance tab, then look at the physical memory section. If there is plenty available, then upgrading memory won't help you.
If you notice there is no available physical memory all the time, then I would suggest upgrading to Windows Vista 64-bit to be able to increase the amount of memory you can see and add. However, that is risky because 64-bit Windows is going to give you a lot of trouble with your software and hardware. A lot of programs/hardware may not be ready for a 64-bit OS.
Another thing to check would be your running processes. For a computer to run smoothly in Windows, there shouldn't be much running in the background. When you hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, check the processes tab, click the show processes for all users checkbox, and note how many processes are running in the background. Let me know how many you have running, then we can see if we can help you improve your performance a bit by preventing programs from starting up with Windows.
Hope that helps!
