Default RAM Issues

Hey guys, new to the forums

Just bought a new stick of 2GB 667mhz DDR2 RAM for my girlfriends PC. The PC has a GA-8TRC410MNF-RH motherboard supporting 400/533/667 mhz upto 4GB.

I removed 2 x 512mb 400mhz sticks and put the new single module in.

After booting up the PC ran fine for about 5 minutes till it restarted itself. After restarting the same happened again with a blue screen of death on one occasion.

I ran a memtest86 on the module and it has no errors at all. I'm wondering if it is an issue with dual channel? Perhaps I need to have 2 identical sticks in each socket?

Any advice would be very much appreciated thanks.

Default Re: RAM Issues

Is this a Packard-Bell (or other name branded) computer?? If so, it might require specific (proprietary) RAM to function properly. I'd suggest going to the Name Brand's site and using their RAM upgrade configurator to see if help is available there. If memory serves me, the '-RH' at the end of the motherboard's Gigabyte part number indicates an OEM board. FWiW, my aftermarket Gigabyte boards will operate with one stick of RAM, though not in the dual channel Memory Mode.

Memory - Upgrading the Memory (RAM) - instr_memory_upgrade - Information and Instructions - IMEDIA 1559 - PB34316701 - iMedia - platform_honeymoon_imedia - Desktop

This is all the information i can find and neither state must buy specific RAM?

Yes - in order for the dual channel to work they must be twins-- if 4-slots they usually go 1+3 and 2+4

Right, would running only one stick of RAM cause the BSOD and systems restarts?
