Default [Answered] RAM question

I currently have 512Mb of RAM, shared between 2 x 256Mb RAMs. If I buy a 1Gb card, do I have to take both the current ones out, or could I leave one in so i get 1.256Gb of RAM? It wouldnt make much of a difference i suppose, but every little helps ^^
