Default [Answered] RAM installed, but not detected at all.

I know that Windows Vista 32-but cannot support over 3.5 (or was it 3.12?) GB of RAM. However, I just purchased a 2GB RAM DDR2-800 to go with my other 2GB stick, which is only 667, and it replaced a 1GB stick of 667. Now, I should have 4GB of RAM, and i know that it cannot be detected. However, I am not even getting a slight increase in RAM. I wasn't expecting it to say 4000, bit it still says 3070 MB, and i thought that it would at least go to 3128 or 3512 or something. Did I do something wrong? Do I need to do something else? Thanks.

By the way, Everest still reads 3070 MB as well, but the Crucial Scan website detected two 2GB sticks. Thanks guys.

3070MB in everest is the CURRENT ram

Remember while your running your PC RAM is being used.

Really? Oh. I Thought that the total memory was how much I had and the used memory was what you were talking about. But that still didn't explain why there was no increase at all, not even a small jump. Is there anything else I have to do to get my Laptop to read that little bit of more memory that it supports. What happens to the rest of that RAM, since it's not being detected by my PC. It's simply just not used? Or does it do something in the background?

Chris, it's anywhere between 3 and 3.4gb, depending on how much XP requires for PCI memory addressing for that memory range, you may well see no increase at all.

It's a little crazy how you could ever utilise that much memory in the first place, unless you running a server! I would have personally spent my money on 1gb DDR2-800 instead of a 2gb DDR2-667?

No I bought a 2GB DDR2 800 the 667 one came with the laptop. But thanks for your help. Just curious thought, so what exactly happens to the unused 1GB on the new 2 GB chip? Is it ever utillized, in say, gaming?

Ahh that's not so bad. It is still utilised by XP, so it's not completely wasted/unused. XP uses the remaining memory between 3 to 3.4 right up to 4gb for PCI memory addressing. If you have 3gb or less in your PC, this would be a process normally handled by your windows pagefile - obvious performance advantage.

EDIT: Marked as Answered.
