Default [Answered] New RAM Purchased, need help with old RAM

My Laptop is a Gateway P-6381FX (A great gaming laptop for the price that it was-$1400.) It came with a Geforce 8800 GTX 512 MB Shared Memory, 3 GB RAM, and a T-5550 Intel Core 2 Duo @ 1.83 GHz, and i specifically bought it for its astounding upgrade capabilities. My two lowest Windows ratings were RAM at 4.5 and Processor at 4.7. I'm planning on upgrading them both, but I wanted to start with the lower rating, RAM, first. It came with 3 GB, and there are two chips in the RAM Slots, so I am guessing there is one 1GB chip and one 2GB Chip, and I know that each of them are DDR2 667. I recently purchased a new 2GB stick DDR2 800 to swap it for the 1GB stick to boost it up to 4GB and utilize that 800 a bit too, and all i really want to know is how I can tell which of the two RAM chips that are currently in my laptop is the 1 GB chip as opposed to the 2 GB Chip so that I know which one to remove. Is it the DIMM number? I know that one says 2 and the other says one, but I wasn't sure. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to PCHF!

If you download Everest from here> |MG| EVEREST Free Edition 2.20 run it and click on Memory it will tell you which stick of Ram is which slot

Also a couple of things to think about... Only 64bit Windows can see more than 3.25gb of ram
and mixing the 800mhz and the 667 will cause the 800 to run at the slightly lower speed of 667

Thanks for your help! So I suppose you are suggesting purchasing a kit (2X 2GB) at 800, which i figured would be better but it was out of the budget at the time, so hopefully i will get to that. So, basically, was my extra memory not worth it? Will there be any performance change at all with a .25-.5 increase, especially given that the speed will decrease on the new stick?

To start here is the Microsoft support article about the 4gb not registering> The system memory that is reported in the System Information dialog box in Windows Vista is less than you expect if 4 GB of RAM is installed

As for the performance issue of the new Ram the best way is to just try it and see, I had problems mixing 2 speeds of Ram on my motherboard but i know members that have had no problems

Just give it a go and see if you can spot a difference

Thank you very much! i ran your program, and now I just need to find out which bank 0 and bank 1. I'm assuming the one one underneath the other is 0, but hell if I know. I'll have to find out somehow. Thank you!

Also, looking at your ram sticks, if one has more black rectangles (memory chips) on it, it's probably the 2 gig one
Also a 1 gig stick may say "64x16" or "128x8" on it, where as a 2 gig stick would say "128x16"
