Unhappy [Resolved] Windows freezes up after RAM upgrade

I upgraded my RAM this evening form 512 of I think PC2700 mb to 2 gb of PC2100 (more of an upgrade of volume, I guess).

My Asus P4P800 Deluxe manual says ""Dual channel memory architecture. Supports PC3200/2700/2100 unbuffered non-ECC DDR DIMMs. 4 x 184-pin DDR DIMM sockets for up to 4 gb memory."

Here is a link to the eBay auction I purchased this RAM from.

They are two-sided modules, and my previous ones were single-sided, but I've read that doesn't matter. So I went along with it. I don't know if that's the problem or not...

On startup, the pc checks the RAM and outputs "2048 mb RAM ok"

On the first time, It reached the sign-on screen, and loaded Windows and it worked for about 5 minutes until freezing point. Then I restarted it, and it froze after 1 minute. Final time, it froze after a few seconds, then everything turned off except the fans.

Any clues? Thanks in advanced.

I had removed the old 2 x 256 mb of RAM, and installed the new 4 x 512 mb of RAM, so just the new modules are in on that pc right now.

Ok it seems as if one of the RAM stick is faulty try running 2 of the new ones by them self if it still freezes try the other 2 new sticks by them selfs it will be a process of elimination here to work out which stick is faulty

Actually... I just removed two of the modules, and now the pc is running fine.

However, now that it porperly got to start up, the "Windows has recovered from a serious error" message popped up, and brought me to a page that said I have 2 antivirus programs running, which causes problems. Sure enough, I had Windows defender and Avast! runing, so I uninstalled Windows Defender.

I'll put the other 2 modules back in, and see what happens then.

Just to let you know, sometimes different RAM modules (different brand, speed, density etc...) don't play nicely with eachother, when I had a PC3200 stick with two PC2100 sticks my computer refused to start, removing the PC2100 sticks solved the problem so don't be alarmed if it doesn't work with your old & new ram together

Actually... I think I found it. Digging a little deeper in the manual it says "Double-sided (16x) RAM modules are not supported due to chipset limitations."

That explains why only two modules (32x total) will work at only one time, and adding any more the the already 32x crashes the system.

Wish I'd read that earlier...
