Default Memory woes

My Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro socket 754 and I presently have 3 sticks of 256mb DDR SDRAM installed (768mb) and while this is enough I originally bought 3 1gb sticks (which this motherboard supports), they are DDR400, not sure what my current ones are, I think DDR266? I know it's PC3200 (okay, I'm pretty sure it is, it might be PC2100). When I try to insert my 1gb sticks, even just one, the first screen shows it as having the full 3gb installed and freezes at that, it doesn't move on to detect IDE drives, it just stays at that screen until I power off. I really want to use this memory if possible, I don't suppose anybody can troubleshoot this? The memory was bought new and Gigabyte's website says it's compatible
