Default Adding Memory

Hi, I'm still new on the computer. I bought a 1GBDDR. When I installed it It still says I have 1 GB memory. Should it be like that or should it say I have 2GB? or did I install it wrong? Can someone help me with this? Thank you.

Did you already have 1GB of memory in your system before you installed the new 1GB?

Cause if you added 1GB to a previous 1GB, yes that would be 2GB of memory.

Also make sure the memory you are adding is the same as your current memory. I am in computer sales and i get people buying DDR2 memory on sale and trying to add it to DDR, these are not compatible. Check that your motherboard supports more than 1GB of memory.
