Default Help! I'm Memory/RAM Illiterate!!

I am semi-knowledgable when it comes to computers, except this complex memory stuff. All I know is that one day, my computer was working fine and the next, programs were freezing, some not even opening or closing, my internet was as slow as can be. I immediately thought a virus or adware. Then I kept getting random pop-ups saying I was "low on virtual memory" ...sure! whatever that means....lol. Then other warnings when running programs saying that "requests for memory may be denied". I had no clue.

I went through and deleted programs I didn't need anymore, cookies, and temp files. Nothing really worked. I finally just googled "memory" and figured out that I needed more RAM. I did find out that my HP Compaq Presario has 384 MB of RAM, and apparently I need more. I have absolutely no clue how much more I need, what kind, where to get it, etc etc. Also- -I'm a poor college student, anyway to get more RAM without paying for it?

Please help! I can't take the slowness anymore! Thanks!!!!

oh yeah. thats wayyyy to low memory. But it sounds like you may have a virus of some sort. please follow the prework in my signature, and we will work on getting you more memory. first, what is the model of you computer? i wouldnt count on finding free memoy. most people wont just give it away. but its dirt cheap nowadays, (less than $100 for 2GB) so dont worry, we can easily find you cheap memory

Actually, I thought it was a virus too so I originally posted on the HJT Forum. I did all that prework (and then some...) no less than a week ago. Here is the link from that Forum:

http://www.pchelpforum.com/hijackthi...ijack-log.html

I would really like if I did not have to do the prework again...since my PC is sooo slow. It took almost the entire day to get through the whole thing. Buutt...if doing it again means getting this problem fixed, I'm willing.

The prework and all the steps they asked me to do from that forum helped...temporarily. The past couple days have been horrible.

My model?? Uh...lol. I'm pulling this from the front of my modem : SR1520NX
I wouldn't know any other place to find my model. Does that sound correct?

Let me know what you need me to do!

yes thats what im looking for. if you are having the problem again... are you using a firewall of any kind? ill get back to you soon on your RAM type

EDIT> Ok you have DDR-400 SDRAM. here is a gig on newegg for cheap Crucial 1GB (2x 512MB) DDR-400 184-pin DDR-SDRAM
If you get it, i reccomend removing your old RAM and installing just the new stuff because you only have 2 RAM slots. hope that helps
P.S. A new, faster Processor couldnt hurt either

lol no problem. installing RAM is a cinch.
Step 1: Remove Computer Cover
Step 2: Ground yourself by touching the metal case
Step 3: unplug computer from wall
Step 4: Locate RAM Slots on the motherboard
Step 5: Remove old RAM Module
Step 6: Gently insert New RAM modules (make sure the divider is on the correct side of the slot) and put into place, until the latches lock.
Step 7: Gently make sure the modules are locked by trying to pull them out
Step 8: plug computer in, and turn on to confirm it works
Step 9: Replace cover and your DONE!
